Our trainer Brent Sands is an avid hockey player and knows what’s needed to improve your hockey skills off the ice. Let’s be honest- it’s more fun to play a sport when you have the physical strength to really enjoy it.

5 elements your body needs to enjoy playing Hockey:

Balance

Whole body strength and power

Agility and reactivity

Speed and quickness

Anaerobic energetics

Having a strong lower body is essential for playing ice hockey. Lack of balance and strength is the number one issue limiting most players’ skating abilities.

The stronger the lower body, the better able you are to execute the skills required for hockey. Weak muscles result in a higher skating profile, poor balance, short stride, slow starts and top-heavy stops, leaving you in a poor position to change direction quickly.

Asking a player to get lower and produce more powerful strides requires strength in the core, thighs, glutes, hips, knees, and ankles. We need all these muscles to fire in sequence to maximize effort.

Improving your balance and strength will improve puck handling, passing, and shooting. A well postured, confidently controlled body brings the assurance that relaxes the mind and allows vision to open up so you can see more of the ice….and that is where anticipation comes from in excellent hockey players.

Training in balance increases body control, allowing the muscles and brain to fire in unison to create a perfect movement.

Skating involves the use of three primary joints: knees, ankles, and hips with assistance from the arms and shoulders. Muscles and tendons support and provide stability to your joints. Your lower body and upper body are connected by your core. If a player has a weak core the lower and upper body are somewhat disconnected in movement. In skating, the abduction, extension and external rotation motions are the most important.

During our off-ice strength and conditioning program here at the Vail Vitality Center, we target your skating stride imbalances, correct them, strengthen them and perfect them, enabling you to play, and feel, your best.
