It’s fun to play outside in the mountains, but Vail’s high altitude sun is harsh on the skin. The Spa at the Vail Vitality Center offers an Illuminate Facial that encourages cell turnover and overall rejuvenation in the skin, so the dry and damaging climate of Vail won’t take so much of a toll.
“When we’re in our twenties and thirties, skin turns over every 28 days or so,” shares Lisa DeKoster with the Spa. “But the older you get, the slower it turns over, so it can be more like a 50-day cycle. And when that happens, skin can just be kind of dull.”
The specialized Illuminate Facial is a refining treatment that uses either microdermabrasion or dermaplaning to exfoliate the skin, following by LED anti-aging light therapy.
Microdermabrasion treatments use a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration and sun damage.
Dermaplaning is a techniques that removes dead skin cells as well as facial hair, and DeKoster said it creates a glow on the skin.
“So whenever the skin can tolerate dermaplaning, that’s my treatment of choice,” she shares. “People really love their skin afterwards, and it reflects light so much better when there’s not all of that facial hair.”
For people who wear makeup, of who are preparing their skin for a special occasion, DeKoster says makeup goes on so beautifully when facial hair has been removed.
Those who may not have a lot of facial hair, but do have a lot of congestion on the skin, for instance, may do better with the microdermabrasion because you can clean the skin without irritating any inflammation.
The esthetician for your treatment will do a quick analysis to decide if microdermabrasion or dermaplaning is the best choice for your skin.
The LED light treatment that follows microdermabrasion or dermaplaning during the Illuminate Facial promotes cellular turnover.
“A whole cascade of events happen on a cellular level when the photons are absorbed,” explains DeKoster. “You help the skin heal, help the skin with inflammation, help strengthen elasticity, and provide cellular structural strength to the skin.”
