Vail Athletic Club brings in live heart rate-based training to its classes with Polar Club Fitness.
Paying close attention to your heart rate when you’re exercising is a great way to understand your body and how hard it’s working at any point during your workout session. The Vail Athletic Club has introduced Polar Club Fitness classes to the schedule so members and guests can start to engage in their fitness goals through interactive technology.
Every person who comes to a Polar Club Fitness class at the Vail Athletic Club will be provided a Polar H10 heart rate sensor to wear, and can register with the Polar Flow app or sign up for class as a guest. This gives the fitness class instructor live feedback on an iPad so he or she can see what heart rate zones every individual moves through during the class.
“Throughout class the trainer is shown different colors for each person, based on their percentage of max heart rate, so you’re able to tell if somebody should be working harder, but the main thing is seeing when someone needs to back it off a little bit,” explains Blake Gould, fitness operations manager and lead coach for the Vail Athletic Club in the Vail Vitality Center. “So depending on what you want to do in the class, whether your goal is to push people to that max limit, or make sure that people aren’t pushing too hard, you get that instant feedback just based on what color their name or number is.”
To get more out of each and every workout, you can create your own Polar account at flow.polar.com and start receiving your results to your email immediately after the workout has ended. Or, download the Polar Flow app to your smartphone to have your results on the go — some find the app much more user friendly than the website. This also gives trainers access to someone’s metrics even when they are not in the gym, if that is what is desired, which can be helpful for more integrative and effective personal training.
“It’s a pretty great system,” Gould shares. “When someone creates their account, we have the ability to go in and if they register under our company, we can actually and see what they have done — not only during that class, but we can go in and see what they’re heart rate is doing when they’re not in the gym.”
Polar Club Fitness at the Vail Athletic Club are high-intensity interval training classes, also known as the popular “HIIT” training, and Gould said participants will work in heart rate zones 3 and 4, and sometimes 5, the highest zone. Several Polar Club Fitness classes are offered each week at the Vail Athletic Club. Visit the fitness class schedule here for class days and times.
Creating this fun, energetic, instant-feedback environment will leave you motivated and ready for your next workout.
“We’re going to be adding more and more classes,” Gould shares, “and this is very unique to the valley. There are not that many places that are approaching training this way.”
