We hear a lot about anti-aging in the media but what does that really mean? At the Vitality Center, we know aging is inevitable. I believe the mindset should be switched to PRO-aging and the focus placed on techniques to help you age gracefully.

Of course the products we use on our skin play a big role in how you age on the outside, but we must remember that aging starts from the inside out. Healthy eating, daily exercise, and most importantly a positive attitude have a large impact on healthy aging.

The big hype has been all about anti-aging, natural beauty products. An online study conducted in June and detailed on www.skininc.com revealed nearly six in 10 U.S. adult women read beauty product ingredient labels prior to purchase. Of those surveyed, 54 percent of women claimed it is important that their skincare product purchases are all natural.

At The Spa at the Vail Vitality Center, our therapists use organic and bio-dynamically grown plant-based products and have for more than two decades — long before it was en vogue. But aside from embracing products that are pure, our skin and how we look is indicative of our internal health.

Beautiful aging is not limited to taking care of you skin on the outside, but helping keep the body healthy from the inside out is extremely important. Start by improving your diet. Food is medicine, which is why I encourage you to skip foods that have been found to cause inflammation (i.e., pain), such as sugar, saturated fats, gluten and lactose (if you’re sensitive or intolerant).

Instead, fill your plate with foods that are known to have healing effects, especially antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans; healthy fats; anti-inflammatory spices, such as turmeric, ginger and cinnamon; probiotics; and green tea.

Everyone knows exercise is part of healthy living, but did you know that breaking a sweat does wonders for your skin? Exercise gets your blood flowing, and a good sweat helps detoxify the skin.

Finally, I’m a firm believer that attitude really is everything. Even just fostering a sense of gratitude in your life and maintaining a happy attitude makes a big difference in how you look. I’ve seen people who have wrinkles, yes, but they also have this beautiful outlook on life and a great smile; a great smile takes 10 years off your life.

I think that’s what healthy aging is about — maintaining a positive, grateful outlook. That creates radiance. Get outdoors and spend time in nature to help maintain a great attitude. When it comes down to it, another snazzy serum isn’t going to be the thing that sinks in over time.

FacialTo be clear, I do believe in caring for and protecting the skin with healing products. However, what we have the most control over as we age is our outlook and our attitude about the process. And I find the best looking people are the happy ones who embrace the whole process with gratitude.

Anti-aging is a term we’ve all heard for the past 10 years, and frankly, I’m over it. Despite our best efforts to the contrary, we’re all aging. At the The Spa at the Vail Vitality Center, we encourage vitality, healthful habits and positive energy, as well as smart decisions. That means getting enough sleep, keeping your stress under control, getting adequate exercise, finding ways to calm your mind and, of course, eating healthy — all things that are extremely important if you want your skin to look good.

Rather than focusing all on anti-aging products and treatments, we need to address and prevent premature aging by focusing on holistic, whole-body health. That way, you’ll feel good inside and reflect that in how you look.

This is part of why our treatments at The Spa extend beyond the skin. Our Radiant Vitality facial uses microdermabrasion technology to remove the top layer of dead skin, leaving the underlying facial skin very receptive to the serum and hydrating mask slathered on next, which penetrates even deeper with the assistance of ultrasound.

But we want to go deeper. That’s why during some of the 75-minute or 100-minute facials, our therapists employ additional techniques, such as a foot massage with St. Johns Wort foot cream, a shoulder or scalp massage or perhaps lymphatic stimulation. Our goal is for people to deeply relax so they feel as rejuvenated as they look. We don’t want to just clean your pores; we want to take you on a journey of relaxation.
