Why is a metabolic test important before beginning a workout program?

When most people work out, they think the harder the workout, the quicker and better the results. What most people don’t know, especially if they are trying to lose weight, is that they might be exercising completely wrong by working out as hard as they can. How many times have we heard stories of people pushing themselves hard day in and day out to little avail? We have the answers through Metabolic Testing at the Vail Vitality Center.

Metabolic Testing is a test performed through a gas exchange system while walking on a treadmill. Through the test, we can determine at what heart rate your body stops burning fat and becomes carbohydrate dependent (burning only carbs).

Why is this important and how does it affect your workouts? By understanding what your heart rate zone is for optimal fat burning, we can write exercise programs that keep you in your fat burning heart rate zone. By working out in your fat burning zone, we can help you burn more fat, but also train your body to utilize fat for a sustainable energy source.

The end goal is to train to where we end up shifting your heart rate zone to where you are burning fat at a higher heart rate than when we started. Once we can burn fat/utilize fat at a higher heart rate, now when you do harder workouts, you will be getting the results you want.
